On Sunday, March 26th, 23 athletes represented Philadelphia at the 2017 Eastern Bowling Sectional. Our athletes joined 299 other athletes from the eastern part of the state, which includes Area P, Bethlehem City, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Columbia/Montour, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Luzerne, Montgomery, Northampton, Northumberland/Snyder, Schuylkill, Union, and host, Lehigh County for a day filled with strikes, spares, and the occasional gutter ball.
Athletes arrived at DeSales University for Opening Ceremonies, where they were taken to outer space. Marty Nothstein, professional road bicycle racer, and Olympic gold and silver medalist shared command with our own, Teddy Angerman, as they lead the spaceship through the parade of athletes, dancers, and the carrying in of the Flame of Hope. Philadelphia also took the spotlight as Raymond Anderson gave an out-of-this-world speech on what Special Olympics means to him and concluded with wishing his fellow athletes luck in their games.
After lunch, our athletes parted ways as they headed to one of three bowling allies for competition. With their fearless coaches leading the way, our athletes boarded yellow spaceships (buses) that took them to Montainville, Parkway or Rose Bowl for competition. As our athletes took turns rotating through their games, our athletes excelled and at the end of their competition, they were awarded right on the lane!
Congratulations to Teddy Angerman, Michael DiAntonio, and Michael Younkers for advancing to Summer Games!
