WHAT IS MEDFEST?

MedFest offers Special Olympics Programs a fast and effective way to recruit new athletes and retain existing athletes by offering free sports medical screenings. Screenings will assess blood pressure, temperature, pulse, height, weight, body mass index, vision, medical history, potential medication side effects and general physical health.

It is sometimes the first exposure these athletes have to medical care. In many cases, life-threatening conditions have been found and subsequently treated thanks to MedFest. Led by volunteer physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and medical students, the MedFest screening consists of the following stations: medical history, height and weight, blood pressure, musculoskeletal test, orthopedic tests, abdominal evaluation and a check out station.  EKG Technicians will administer EKG’s to athletes that have been designated by the physician completing the medical exam for further evaluation. Cardiologists will then review the EKG report to verify if further testing needs to be done by athlete’s family physician.

Who is eligible for medical screenings?

If you’re eligible to be a Special Olympics Athlete, then your invited to our screenings! In fact, you do not even need to be a current athlete in order to attend! If you’ve wanted to join one of our many Special Olympics teams in Philadelphia, then this is your chance to complete the medical portion of your registration! For current athletes with their medicals expiring, this is a great chance to renew your medical. Please contact Michelle Cordell to RSVP for MedFest so we can assign you an attendance time window.
